Took me forever but I eventually found a donor body with hair I thought I could make look more like Lu’s which matched the existing curvy body – so here goes part 2 of making mini Lu.
Hair curling
I have fundamentally straight hair that will not hold a curl, so this was something of a vertical learning curve for me and I suddenly have a lot of respect for my curly haired friends because wow, it is a lot of work!

I used the method of combing out the hair, curling with a straw and kirby grips, dunking in boiling water and then dunking in ice cold water then letting dry completely before I took the curlers out.
At which point I sent a panicked voice note to the real life Lu which basically said how the fuck do I fix this her hair is a tangly cloud! I’d never had to separate and define curls before because my hair won’t hold them for more than a few minutes, so this was an educational experience though not one I’m super keen to repeat any time soon.
Her advice to “use some product” was also slightly panic inducing as I don’t have any hair products other than dry shampoo and leave in conditioner, but I found some ancient salt spray for mermaid waves at the back of my cupboard and it actually did the job really well.
But… here she is and I am delighted – and more importantly, so is real life Lu.
Some tiny tweaks including no bare feet and glasses mostly on head (though I am v pleased I found pink ones for her like her human counterpart).
Mini-us were front & centre of my art trail display in the studio in May, and I’m excited to take them and some of my other dolls out for some photos when I get a chance and the weather co-operates!
