OMG you guys! I can’t believe I haven’t written about this properly yet!

Do you want the shiniest, prettiest, coolest shoes in town?

OF COURSE you do… and I can show you how! My new Foiled Again workshops are now live, and I am so excited to welcome you to my studio and teach you how to make metallic magic!

The backstory

Back in November last year I wanted to do something a bit more interesting while manning my studio for the Wivenhoe Art Trail – photo editing is fun speeded up but really not interesting to watch in real time. And I’d been wanting to customise a pair of cowboy boots for a really long time.

Having seen the foiling/gilding technique I sometimes use on frames can also be used on leather, I decided this was going to be my experiment on my oldest western boots – and it was bloody brilliant, although I did coat myself, my studio and most of my visitors in a very fine coat of metallic pink and purple dust in the process!

I learned a lot from the process, but overall these worked so well that my next project was my ancient, much loved but very battered rollerskates, which I’d waxed metallic turquoise in 2020, but that was rapidly wearing off and they needed some love. Here’s the fairly dramatic improvement before & after foiling them…

I’ve been skating in them since they’ve been foiled and so many people commented and asked if I did customs that I have created a class to teach you how to use the technique on shoes, boots, skates and more!

The Foiled Again Workshop

Come and join me in my studio in Wivenhoe for an afternoon or evening of transforming your shoes into something totally magical.

With different sessions for shoes, boots & skates so everyone is working on a similar sized project at the same time, all you need to bring is the footwear you’d like to transform, and everything else is provided.

I’ll take you from prep all the way to the first coat of varnish in the session, then you leave your magical creations with me to do final varnish coats, and collect a week or two later ready to sparkle & shine!

Want to book? Here’s how:

My studio is small but perfectly formed, so places are limited to a maximum of 5 per session – you can book to join scheduled dates on your own or with others, and if you’d like a private session for just you & your friends, I can definitely arrange that too! Please note the studio is upstairs – I am working on finding a ground floor venue as well.

Larger group bookings are very possible but will need a suitable venue – definitely no carpets, and not outdoors! I always clean up after the event but it is VERY messy so the chances are some sparkly bits will remain after we leave.

Try something new… once you know how, you will want to foil EVERYTHING – and previous students have created custom bags, notebooks and sunglasses cases too.

Head over to the Foiled Again workshop page or click the big pink button below to see when next sessions are scheduled, and drop me a line if you have any questions or if you want to chat about a private booking – hello@carlawatkinsphotography.com.

See you soon for metallic magic!
